the valentine’s day bandit

February 15, 2008

One of the things I love most about Portland is that even in this, one of the dreariest, snowiest winters ever, the city still manages to make us frozen Maine dwellers get the warm fuzzies.

Every Valentine’s day, a person or group of rogue artists plaster the windows of local businesses with white sheets of paper (ok, so it’s not the most sustainable thing but it’s nice) with a red heart printed on them.

No one knows who the V’day bandit is. I mean, yeah, people know but I don’t and no one else I know does but they work in the middle of the night, and there is a fun sense of wonderment driving around town on V’day.  There is one huge fabric white banner with heart on it that is placed somewhere new every year. Last year it was on the Museum of Art. This year, it was in front of Becky’s Diner, where I was fortunate enough to enjoy breakfast with my loves.

Happy Valentines Day, everyone!
